KL Tower management denies history erased, says time capsule plaque removed for safety

LSH Service Master insists Wawasan 2020 plaque was not destroyed but stored, citing safety risks and rebranding compliance amid accusations of historical erasure

KUALA LUMPUR — LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd (LSHSM), the company managing KL Tower, has denied allegations that it and the government attempted to erase national history by removing the Wawasan 2020 Time Capsule plaque. The plaque was removed for safety reasons, the firm stated.

In a statement, LSHSM chief executive officer Khairil Faizal Othman explained that the plaque originally served as a cover for the special chamber housing the time capsule, which was opened on April 14 by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in a ceremony marking 28 years since he placed it there.

With the capsule’s contents now revealed by Dr Mahathir, Khairil said the site no longer contained any historical artefacts and thus no longer functioned as a time capsule location. The plaque area was left empty.

“(However), the plaque structure could no longer be securely closed as before, posing a risk of injury to visitors passing the area,” he said in a statement.

“Therefore, it was removed for safety reasons, in line with the management’s priority to ensure the well-being of all visitors.”

Khairil also clarified that the plaque was not destroyed or discarded, as alleged, but had been carefully stored by LSHSM.

He added that the removal was also in compliance with a new corporate identity policy, as the plaque featured the old corporate logo, which is no longer permitted for official display following the rebranding of KL Tower’s management company.

“We wish to emphasise that there is no intention to erase or alter the nation’s history. All actions taken were based on safety considerations, corporate compliance, and a commitment to preserving the legacy of Kuala Lumpur Tower,” Khairil stressed.

LSHSM’s statement followed a Facebook post by Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan earlier today, in which he said he had been informed of “an attempt to erase history” through the removal of the time capsule plaque.

The Bersatu MP also called on Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil to explain the alleged removal, questioning whether the government intended to deny Dr Mahathir’s role in placing the time capsule and attempting to rewrite national history. — June 6, 2025
