Leaving Umno was my personal decision, not due to pressure: Tengku Zafrul

Investment, Trade and Industry minister says he will serve out his Senate term and is ready to serve the country in any role

KUALA LUMPUR — Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz has reiterated that his decision to leave Umno was made entirely of his own accord and not under any pressure.

“I want to stress once again that my decision to step away from Umno was entirely personal, not due to any coercion,” he said in a post on his social media account today.

“I admit it was not an easy decision to make, but I took into careful consideration all the views and opinions shared with me.”

Tengku Zafrul also dismissed speculation that he would contest in any upcoming by-elections at the state or federal level.

“There has been no discussion about this at all, and it was not a factor in my decision. I do not support triggering by-elections without urgent necessity, as they involve both the people’s time and money,” he said, adding that he had just completed the Hajj pilgrimage with his wife.

The former Umno Supreme Council member and Kota Raja division chief pledged to continue fulfilling his duties as a senator until the end of his term in December.

Commenting on his ministerial position, he said he would leave the matter entirely to the discretion of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, adding that he remains ready to serve the country in any capacity.

Tengku Zafrul recently announced his resignation from all Umno positions and confirmed his intention to join PKR.

His move has drawn criticism from some leaders within the ruling coalition, who questioned the spirit of cooperation in the Unity Government and accused PKR of appearing to celebrate his decision. — June 9, 2025
