KUALA LUMPUR — Media organisations in Malaysia will receive RM30 million in government funding to support digital transformation and the adoption of new technologies, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced.
The allocation is aimed at strengthening the country’s media ecosystem and ensuring its long-term sustainability.
“To my recollection, this is the largest allocation ever provided by the government for journalists since independence,” Anwar said, Bernama reported.
He added that the funding would also support training and development, especially for young journalists, to help the industry adapt to advances in artificial intelligence while maintaining ethical standards.
The announcement was made during the National Journalists’ Day (Hawana) 2025 celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.
Among those in attendance were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, and Communications Ministry Secretary-General Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa.
Bernama’s senior leadership — including chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, CEO Datin Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, and editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who also serves as project director of Hawana 2025 — were also present.
Around 1,000 media professionals from local and international media outlets took part in the event. — June 14, 2025
