SEPANG — The Aerotrain service at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will resume operations on July 1, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced today.
Loke said the service — set to begin at 10am — is currently undergoing trial runs to ensure all safety aspects are in optimal condition.
“The Aerotrain project has been completed and various tests are being carried out to ensure it is safe,” he said during a press conference after inspecting the facility.
According to Bernama, the system is now in its final testing phase, which includes critical emergency response simulations.
Also present at the site visit were Transport Ministry secretary-general Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani, and MAHB chief operating officer Gordon Stewart.
The Aerotrain has served as KLIA’s main internal transport system since the airport’s opening in 1998, but operations were suspended in March 2023 due to technical faults.
Loke said the new Aerotrain system comprises three carriages per train and offers an upgraded, high-quality passenger experience, with each train capable of carrying up to 270 passengers.
“There are three carriages per train, and each carriage can hold 90 passengers — so one trip can accommodate 270 people,” he said.
Two trains will operate in rotation, while a third will be kept in reserve.
“We have three train sets in total — two will run at any given time, and one will be on standby,” Loke explained.
To ensure smooth operation and ongoing maintenance, the Aerotrain will run on both tracks during peak hours, and on a single track during off-peak times.
“We want to make sure the trains are well-maintained and safe, which is why we took time to conduct various tests, including those supervised by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD),” he said.
Loke stressed that the resumption of the Aerotrain is timely as Malaysia prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and takes on the Asean Chairmanship this year.
“There will be many Asean meetings in the coming months through to the end of the year, including another summit in Kuala Lumpur,” he added.
He also said the existing shuttle bus service would remain in place even after the Aerotrain resumes, allowing passengers to use either option for travel within KLIA.
