Bonnie Bunyau claims fourth World Cup gold in Beijing

Sarawakian para powerlifting star tops men’s 72kg category with 215kg lift at Beijing meet

KUALA LUMPUR – National powerlifting ace Bonnie Bunyau Gustin made light work of the competition to strike gold at the 2025 Para Powerlifting World Cup in Beijing, China, yesterday.

The Sarawakian topped the men’s 72kg category with a best lift of 215 kilogrammes (kg) at the China Administration of Sports for Persons with Disabilities (CASPD).

Cuba’s Jesús Cuevas Cisneros claimed silver with a 175kg lift, while India’s Ramubhai B. Bhambava secured bronze after managing 151kg.

Although the winning lift was well below the world record 232kg Bonnie set when defending his Paralympic title in Paris last year, it was enough to secure his fourth World Cup title — following earlier victories in Dubai (2021 and 2024) and Bangkok (2021). — June 23, 2025
