KUALA LUMPUR – Grab Malaysia has launched its first electric vehicle (EV) fleet dedicated to airport rides from KLIA, as part of a broader effort to promote sustainable transport and accelerate EV adoption nationwide.
The initiative, supported by the Transport Ministry, aims to cut carbon emissions and encourage the use of low or zero-emission vehicles, starting with high-demand, high-visibility routes.
“This launch marks an important milestone in reshaping the DNA of on-demand public transport toward low or zero emission modes,” said Grab Malaysia Country Operations and Mobility director Rashid Shukor.
“We are proud to support Malaysia’s green mobility push with the introduction of an EV-only ride option for airport travellers.”
The new service, bookable via the Grab app, features the BYD M6 – a 7-seater electric MPV with a foldable third row to accommodate larger luggage. Grab has also opened an EV Lounge at the KLIA terminal to offer passengers a comfortable waiting space while promoting the new ride option.

KLIA was chosen for the launch due to its strategic importance as a major transport hub with strong demand for ride-hailing services.
“The visibility and volume at KLIA provide the perfect platform to demonstrate that EVs are not only viable but comfortable and future-ready,” said Rashid.
The project builds on a memorandum of understanding signed earlier this year with key industry players: BYD Sime Motors, Yinson GreenTech, and Power-Up Tech. These partners are helping provide access to EV financing, vehicle supply and charging infrastructure to make the transition more accessible for Grab’s driver-partners.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who officiated the launch, said the move supports the ministry’s wider strategy for low-carbon mobility.
“The launch of this EV fleet, ride option, and airport lounge at KLIA is a timely initiative that supports our national sustainability goals while enhancing the travel experience at one of Malaysia’s key transport hubs,” he said.

The EV fleet launch aligns with Malaysia’s target to reduce greenhouse gas emission intensity by 45% by 2030 and Grab’s own goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040.
“We hope this initiative will encourage more partnerships and build greater public confidence in the shift towards electric mobility,” said Loke. – June 24, 2025
