KUALA LUMPUR – Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says the decision on whether to revoke the suspension of former party vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein will be left to the party’s supreme council.
Ahmad Zahid said the matter could be discussed by the Umno supreme council, even though Hishammuddin has not submitted any formal appeal or offered an apology.
“Normally all motions submitted by divisions will be brought to the motions committee for them to go through. In the case of the motion by the Sembrong division, there is a statement by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi saying that he will bring up the matter during (the next) Umno supreme council meeting.
“We will wait and see. This is because the power to suspend or to accept the membership, in the case there is no annual general meeting, lies with the supreme council,” he said.
He was commenting on a motion submitted by the Umno Sembrong division, which called for Hishammuddin’s six-year suspension to be lifted unconditionally.
Ahmad Zahid also stressed that the disciplinary action taken against Hishammuddin had been carried out fairly.
The Umno supreme council had, during its meeting on January 27, 2023, decided to suspend Hishammuddin’s membership for six years after finding that he had breached the party’s constitution. – June 26, 2025
