KUALA LUMPUR – Police have arrested 36 Bangladeshi nationals this week over their direct involvement in a radical militant movement, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail revealed today.
The group is also believed to have established a recruitment cell in Malaysia.
In a statement today, Saifuddin said police carried out a detailed security operation beginning April 24, involving three phases of arrests across Selangor and Johor.
As a result, five Bangladeshi nationals have been charged at the Shah Alam and Johor Bahru Sessions Courts under Chapter VI A of the Penal Code for terrorism-related offences.
Another 15 individuals have been deported, while 16 are still under investigation for their suspected involvement.
According to Saifuddin, intelligence work and coordinated efforts by the police’s Special Branch revealed that the group had been importing Islamic State (IS)-based extremist ideology into Malaysia.
They had also set up a recruitment cell within their community to indoctrinate followers, raise funds for terror activities, and support efforts to topple the legitimate government in their home country.
At present, Bangladesh is governed by an interim administration led by Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus, formed after the overthrow of the previous government under former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the July Revolution last year.
“I would like to stress that Malaysia will never be a shelter or host for any subversive elements from foreign extremist movements,” Saifuddin said.
“These actions by the authorities show that the Madani government is serious and will not tolerate any elements that threaten national security.
“The success of this operation also reflects the efficiency and professionalism of our national security agencies, particularly the police, in safeguarding sovereignty, harmony and public order.”
He added that the Home Ministry would continue strengthening its intelligence capacity, intensifying enforcement, and working closely with both local and international security agencies to ensure Malaysia remains peaceful, stable and free from terrorism.
“Any attempt to use Malaysia as a base or transit hub for militant operations will be met with stern, swift and effective action.” – June 27, 2025
