KUALA LUMPUR – The skipper of the boat that capsized near Pulau Perhentian last weekend, killing three passengers, including two young children, pleaded guilty today to drug abuse.

Azrie Yazid, 22, admitted at the Besut magistrates’ court to self-administering nimetazepam, also known under the street name as Erimin 5, a substance listed under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

He was charged with committing the offence at the Besut Narcotics Headquarters at 10.05 am last June 29 – the day after the incident occurred, Bernama reported.

Azrie was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the act, which carries a maximum penalty of RM5,000 or up to two years’ imprisonment upon conviction. Magistrate Nik Mohd Tarmizie Nik Mohd Shukri granted him bail of RM2,500 with one surety and set September 4 for case mention.

The prosecution was led by inspector Mohd Zaidi Mat Yasin, while Norhuda Mohamed Khan from the National Legal Aid Foundation represented the accused.

Azrie was detained after he tested positive for drugs following the boat tragedy on the night of June 28. He also has five prior drug-related offences.

The incident occurred around 10.30pm during stormy weather and rough seas. The boat, carrying 15 people aged between three and 40, capsized after being struck by strong waves. None of the passengers were wearing life jackets.

Three victims – S. Arumugam, 40, his 3-year-old daughter A. Sarrvihka, and their 10-year-old relative V. Vennpani – were pronounced dead. 12 others were rescued, including a 6-year-old girl who remains in critical condition at Besut Hospital.

Besut police chief Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu had said the tragedy underscored the importance of safety compliance, especially the use of life jackets. He also reminded boat operators to observe all maritime safety regulations and urged families to remain vigilant when visiting resort islands. – July 3, 2025
