JPJ to suspend licences of bus, lorry drivers involved in accidents

Drivers found guilty will have their licences revoked, and all suspended drivers must undergo a JPJ-run refresher course before returning to the road

KUALA LUMPUR — Commercial vehicle drivers involved in road crashes will have their licences temporarily suspended pending investigation outcomes, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) announced.

Its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said any driver holding a public service vehicle (PSV) or goods driving licence (GDL) found guilty following a police investigation will have their licence revoked.

“To ensure commercial vehicle drivers are competent, JPJ will ensure that suspended individuals must undergo and pass a refresher course before their licences are reactivated or removed from the suspension list.

“The refresher course will be organised by the JPJ at locations to be determined later and drivers will be charged fees to cover the cost of the course,” he told reporters after a licence presentation ceremony today.

According to Aedy Fadly, five commercial drivers have already been suspended under this initiative, including those involved in two recent high-profile incidents — the fatal crash involving a Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Federal Reserve Unit lorry in Teluk Intan, and a bus that collided with a height restriction barrier in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan on Saturday.

In a separate update, he said the JPJ has issued 510 compound notices to express buses, tour buses and goods vehicles since the phased enforcement of mandatory seat belt usage came into effect on July 1.

Of these, 80 notices were issued to drivers, while 396 were issued to passengers and vehicle attendants.

He also reminded express bus drivers of their obligation to ensure all passengers are wearing seat belts before departure, warning that drivers could be fined if passengers are found in violation. — July 6, 2025
