Umno appeals to YDPA to let Najib serve sentence under house arrest

Party says request follows AG’s confirmation of royal decree allowing such arrangement, ‘which has been delayed for over a year’

KUALA LUMPUR – Umno today appealed to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim to allow former party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest, following the attorney-general’s recent confirmation of an addendum decree authorising such an arrangement.

In a statement, Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party is pleased with the AG’s confirmation of the decree.

“Umno would like to humbly plead with His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong that the house arrest decree can be enforced in accordance with His Majesty’s absolute powers based on Article 42(1) of the Federal Constitution,” said Asyraf in the statement.

“It is hoped that His Majesty would allow Datuk Seri Najib Razak to get a reduced sentence, which has been delayed for more than a year.”

According to local media, the Federal Court was told on July 9 that AG Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar had acknowledged the existence of the addendum.

Senior federal counsel Shamsul Bolhassan reportedly said Dusuki had confirmed the existence of the addendum on July 2. However, he was disputing its genuineness and validity.

Najib is demanding that the government implement the January 29, 2024 order in the addendum issued by former Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah – which allows him to serve the remainder of his SRC International jail sentence under house arrest.

The former prime minister learned about the addendum decree soon after the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB) announced in early February last year that his 12-year jail term was halved and the RM210 million fine reduced to RM50 million. – July 11, 2025
