KUALA LUMPUR – The Conference of Rulers is expected to announce the appointment of Malaysia’s new top judicial post tomorrow, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.
Speaking at the 2025 International Conference on Governance and Integrity in Putrajaya, Anwar said the long-awaited announcement should dispel recent negative perceptions surrounding judicial independence.
“This morning I had an extensive discussion with the Conference of Rulers, and I believe it is best to leave the decision to them. God willing, there will be an announcement tomorrow that will put to rest all the negative perceptions that have emerged.
“Once the announcement is made, it will be clear that the Madani government is fully committed to reform, including upholding the principle of judicial independence,” he said.
Anwar also stressed that he had never interfered in the appointment process since taking office more than two and a half years ago.
“I assure you that in the time I’ve been in office, I have never discussed in detail a single case — not with judges, not with anyone. I am not here to undermine judicial independence,” he said.
He acknowledged concerns over delays in appointments and the perceived exclusion of certain candidates for key judicial roles but reiterated his commitment to a fair process.
“The concerns raised were over the delay in appointments and the perceived omission of some candidates from top judicial posts, which may have created a sense of unease. I assure you, that is not the case,” he said. — July 15, 2025
