Abu Bakar Jais named Court of Appeal president, Azizah Nawawi to head Sabah and Sarawak judiciary as top judges retire this month

KUALA LUMPUR — Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh has been named the new Chief Justice, succeeding Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who retired on July 2.

The Chief Registrar of the Courts issued a statement this evening confirming that Wan Ahmad Farid, 62, was appointed in accordance with Clause (1) of Article 122B of the Federal Constitution.

This appointment received the approval of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, based on the prime minister’s recommendation and after discussions with the Conference of Rulers.

Additionally, Judge Datuk Abu Bakar Jais has been appointed as the president of the Court of Appeal, and Datuk Azizah Nawawi will take over as Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak following the retirement of the current Chief Judge.

“The appointment letters will be presented, and the swearing-in ceremony will take place before His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on July 28, 2025, at the Istana Negara (National Palace),” the statement read.

Previously, Wan Ahmad Farid served as a judge of the Court of Appeal.

Abu Bakar, 63, steps into the role of president of the Court of Appeal after Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim’s retirement on July 3.

Meanwhile, Azizah, also 63, will succeed Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, who is set to retire on July 25. — July 18, 2025
