KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Robert Phang Miow Sin, the founder and chairman of the Social Care Foundation and a vocal anti-corruption advocate, passed away on Friday evening. He was 85.

Phang, who once served on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) advisory board, breathed his last at 6.30pm at Tung Shin Hospital.

News of his death was shared by former DAP central executive committee member Ronnie Liu.

Known equally for his social work and no-nonsense stance on public accountability, Phang built a reputation for being unafraid to speak his mind – even against powerful figures.

He made headlines in 2022 when he fiercely criticised MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki over allegations surrounding a stock trading scandal.

Phang accused Azam of mocking the justice system and breaching internal SOPs by allowing his brother to use his share-trading account.

Phang had even called for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) and proposed a temporary interdiction of Azam’s duties, suggesting that the MACC’s credibility was at stake.

Beyond his activism, Phang was a well-regarded philanthropist. He contributed computer equipment to schools in Sabah, Sarawak, Pahang, and Kedah, and donated air purifiers to dialysis centres in Klang. He also helped raise funds for children with heart diseases to undergo life-saving surgeries.

In 2005, Phang personally travelled to Sulawesi, Indonesia, to help secure the release of two KPMG auditors who had been detained for 50 days — an act that further cemented his status as someone who walked the talk.

Phang’s efforts through the Social Care Foundation have benefited countless marginalised groups across Malaysia, reflecting a life dedicated to justice and service.

Although his passing marks the end of a remarkable chapter, many believe Phang’s fearless advocacy and social work will continue to inspire future generations.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, who knew Phang personally, particularly during her time as a Selangor State Speaker, paid tribute to him, saying: “He was always very generous with his advice. My dealings with him were mainly when I was serving in Selangor. A very kind man.” – July 19, 2025
