PUTRAJAYA — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating an individual suspected of posting extremely offensive comments on Facebook that touched on the royal institution regarding the issue of the appointment of the Chief Justice.

MCMC said today announced that the person’s statement was recorded at the Kampung Melayu Subang police station in Selangor, and a mobile phone with a SIM card was also seized to assist in the investigation.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both, if convicted.

MCMC warns the public to use social media platforms ethically, prudently and responsibly.

“Avoid spreading extremely offensive content, incitement or slander that may affect the harmony and peace of the country, especially those involving the royal institution,” the MCMC statement added. — July 21, 2025
