KUALA LUMPUR – A TikTok user is being investigated for allegedly uploading false and grossly offensive content targeting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said the posts were believed to be reactions to two issues – public backlash over a controversial “immoral” party held in the country, and the prime minister’s recent announcement on incentive handouts.
Another post allegedly contained similarly false and grossly offensive claims regarding Anwar’s official trip abroad.
The individual’s statement was recorded at MCMC’s headquarters in Cyberjaya on Monday (July 21). Investigators also seized a mobile phone and SIM card.
The case is being probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.
MCMC stressed that it will not tolerate the misuse of social media platforms to spread grossly offensive or baseless allegations, and will continue to take firm action to safeguard public order and national harmony. – July 22, 2025
