Malaysia stepping up counter-intelligence efforts as Palestine stance draws foreign spy threats: IGP

Police confirm reinforced screenings of foreigners staying in the country for long periods after PM Anwar warns of Israeli intelligence operations targeting Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR – The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding national security, warning that the country faces external threats including possible infiltration attempts by foreign intelligence agencies.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said PDRM remains vigilant against foreign efforts that could compromise Malaysia’s sovereignty, especially covert activities orchestrated by foreign operatives or agencies.

“There have been incidents under investigation which are suspected to involve foreign intelligence services,” he said in a statement.

“These include the abduction of a Palestinian national and a case involving the possession of six firearms, believed to be linked to the same network.”

As part of preventive measures, PDRM has reinforced screening at all entry points into the country, particularly monitoring foreign nationals who stay in Malaysia for extended periods — whether as residents or on work-related visits, such as foreign consultants.

Efforts are also ongoing to ensure the safety of Palestinians residing in Malaysia. Authorities have advised the community to adopt a low-profile lifestyle to avoid becoming targeted individuals and to report any suspicious behaviour to the police.

In support of these initiatives, PDRM is working closely with various government agencies on security-related matters. This includes ongoing information-sharing and coordination both domestically and with international partners.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told Parliament that Malaysia’s vocal stance on the Palestinian issue may have attracted the attention of Israeli intelligence.

“There’s a strong possibility that our firm position on Palestine has made Malaysia a target of Mossad’s intelligence activities,” Anwar said during Prime Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

He added that Malaysia has also become a transit point for arms and drug smuggling, but assured that the Home Ministry has taken proactive steps to enhance national defence capabilities.

“These are conclusions drawn from the latest briefing by our intelligence agencies,” he said. “They are taking this matter very seriously, and there is evidence of operations involving local actors, including Malay couples allegedly collaborating with Mossad.”

Anwar was responding to a supplementary question from Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, who raised concerns about foreign spy infiltration, particularly by Mossad agents.

Wan Ahmad Fayhsal also cited security vulnerabilities related to the country’s automated immigration clearance (autogate) system.

Addressing this, Anwar said the issue had involved coordination with international security organisations, including Interpol, but confirmed that the problem has since been resolved.

“The system has already been rectified,” he said. – July 23, 2025
