KUALA LUMPUR – A 56-year-old man was arrested for stabbing a police officer during a routine crime prevention patrol at Pudu Market today.
Speaking to Scoop, acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad confirmed the arrest and said the suspect had been detained shortly after the incident.
“The victim, along with four other officers, was conducting a check on the suspect when he suddenly became aggressive and stabbed one of the officers in the abdomen with a knife before fleeing the scene,” he said.
The wounded officer was rushed to Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM, where he is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries.
Usuf added that police managed to apprehend the suspect, a Chinese man, nearby and recovered several items from his possession.
“Among the items seized were a 21.5cm knife believed to be used in the attack, and three transparent packets containing yellowish powder and chunks, suspected to be narcotics.
“A urine test was conducted on the suspect and he tested positive for methamphetamine. We believe the suspect may have been under the influence during the incident,” he added.
The case is being investigated under Sections 307 and 186 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and obstructing a public servant from performing their duties.
The suspect will be remanded on August 1 to assist in the ongoing investigation.
Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward with information.
