KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Armed Forces will facilitate the upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) meeting between Thailand and Cambodia, set to take place in Kuala Lumpur from August 4 to 7.
In a statement released today, the Defence Intelligence and Strategic Communications Division of the Malaysian Armed Forces confirmed that the meeting will focus on resolving the ongoing border dispute between the two nations, in line with the ceasefire agreement brokered by Malaysia on July 28.
“Malaysia is the neutral venue chosen mutually by Thailand and Cambodia for their GBC meeting this time around. The Terms of Reference (ToR) for the deployment of a Defence Attaché as the interim team and the deployment of the ASEAN Monitoring Group will be part of the GBC agenda,” the statement read, as quoted by Bernama.
The ceasefire, which came into effect at midnight on July 28, was the result of a special meeting facilitated by Malaysia.
The meeting, held at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya, saw Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai jointly agree to the ceasefire, following weeks of escalating tensions.
The two countries have long grappled with diplomatic friction over an 817-kilometre undemarcated section of their shared border.
Tensions recently flared on May 28, when a skirmish near the disputed Preah Vihear area led to the death of a Cambodian soldier. – August 2, 2025
