KUALA LUMPUR – TikTok should not be made the ‘judge’ in the death of Zara Qairina, as anyone can create content using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi, who is also the spokesperson for the Unity Government, made the statement in response to the recent death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir from a religious school last month.
“We need to be careful with the content we see on social media. It may not be true or verified.
“Even I feel inclined to believe what I see on TikTok. But relying on TikTok as the judge is not right because anyone can create content—even using AI,” he said.
He shared his views during the Hello Malaysia podcast, where he discussed various topics.
On Wednesday, the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) returned the preliminary investigation report to the police to be completed regarding the case of the deceased Form 1 student, Zara Qairina Mahathir.
Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar stated that, for now, the AGC could not comment on any actions to be taken or whether an inquest will be held to investigate the girl’s death.
He added that detailed information could not be disclosed, but there are several aspects that need further attention.
Meanwhile, Fahmi, speaking as a father, expressed his understanding of Zara’s mother’s quest for justice.
“I have a child around the same age as the late Zara. As a father, I understand the desire for justice for her.
“The Prime Minister has assured that if anyone is involved or connected, they will be brought to justice. The PM will not protect anyone.
“We need to give it a bit of time. The Attorney General has returned the case to the police to carry out further steps before it’s handed to the prosecutors for the next course of action,” he said.
Fahmi also urged the public to be patient and not to jump to conclusions based on content seen on TikTok or Telegram.
“Some are saying she was put into a washing machine. That’s not true. I believe we’ll know the real story soon. Let’s trust the police to carry out a thorough investigation.
“No one should accuse other children. That in itself is an offence.
“Please be patient, give it time, don’t rush to conclusions based on TikTok or Telegram. The information may not be verified. As a father, I want justice for Zara,” he said. – August 8, 2025
