Seri Kota stun SSBJ to end unbeaten run in Under-14 league

Afiq’s second-half free-kick secures only second win of the season for Group B underdogs

KUALA LUMPUR — A second-half free-kick by Muhd Afiq Asyraf Asran handed SMK Seri Kota a 1-0 win over Sekolah Sukan Bukit Jalil (SSBJ), ending their opponents’ unbeaten record in Group B of the 2025 Education Minister’s Cup Under-14 Football League, held in partnership with 100PLUS.

Afiq struck in the 51st minute, his set-piece sailing straight into the net to secure Seri Kota’s second victory of the campaign, following their win over SMK Putrajaya Presint 8(1) in late June.

Assistant coach Mohd Saiful Mustafa said the result reflected the squad’s progress after a demanding season.

“Alhamdulillah, we’ve now got our second win after a run of many draws,” he said. “This team is being developed for the Under-16 and Under-17 levels. Winning is secondary — what’s important is that they understand the game and its technical aspects.

“They can play, but consistency is hard to find at this age. We must remember they’re only 14 and still in the learning process.”

After nine matches, Seri Kota sit eighth in Group B with 11 points from two wins, five draws and two defeats.

SSBJ, who remain third with 19 points after eight games — level with SMK Taman Desa Skudai — vowed to bounce back.

Assistant coach Adrian Shaun Scully said maintaining a top position was never easy.

“Congratulations to Seri Kota for an intense match,” he said. “We tried to score but luck wasn’t on our side. The league is still long, and we will keep fighting until the end.” — August 10, 2025
