KUALA LUMPUR — BlackBerry Limited has expanded its Secure Communications division’s Asia-Pacific headquarters in Malaysia, deepening its long-term commitment to the country and the wider Asean region.
The move builds on the launch of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)–BlackBerry Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence in Cyberjaya in March 2024.
The Canadian tech firm is now scaling its presence across three locations – Cyberjaya, central Kuala Lumpur and Mont Kiara.
The expansion includes a new sales and marketing office, along with a Regional Support Centre staffed by more than 50 technical experts. The facility will provide round-the-clock support and professional services for clients across the Asia-Pacific region.
“As Malaysia strengthens its position as a regional hub for digital resilience and innovation, we are proud to expand our APAC Secure Communications headquarters here – now with enhanced 24/7 support for a region tackling complex risks,” said Tash Stamatelos, senior vice-president for BlackBerry in APAC, in a statement today.
“This expansion supports both BlackBerry’s regional growth strategy and Malaysia’s national priorities, including capacity building, enhanced disaster response, and the implementation of sovereign, military-grade communications to combat rising espionage.”
The MCMC has welcomed the expansion, saying it will drive deeper collaboration between the public and private sectors in strengthening the country’s cyber defences.
BlackBerry said the move will boost Malaysia’s ability to protect government, critical infrastructure and industry from evolving cyber threats, reinforcing its role as a regional hub for secure communications.
The announcement comes after the government of Canada pledged C$3.9m (RM13.57 million) over several years for cybersecurity training at the Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence.
The funding, revealed at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in November 2024, will support programmes including the globally recognised Certifications for Leadership in Cybersecurity course, set to begin in November 2025.
A recent partnership with EC-Council will also provide self-paced learning courses for Malaysian civil servants to further enhance national cyber capabilities. — August 13, 2025
