KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for an immediate and transparent investigation following a shocking incident involving the child of former economy minister Rafizi Ramli.

In a brief statement, Anwar condemned the attack, urging swift action.

“We are still reeling from the scourge of bullying in schools, and now, another reprehensible act has emerged. Most recently, a malicious and treacherous attempt against the child of Brother Rafizi Ramli,” Anwar said.

“I have contacted Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution to ensure a thorough and immediate investigation.”

Anwar also extended his prayers for Rafizi and his family: “I pray for the best of health for Brother Rafizi and his family.”

The attack took place earlier today in Putrajaya, where Rafizi’s son was assaulted by a man who injected him with a syringe while he was entering a car with his wife.

Rafizi described the harrowing ordeal, stating, “Around 1:45 p.m., as my child and wife were about to leave a shopping mall in Putrajaya, a man suddenly dragged my child and injected him with a syringe.”

Rafizi noted that earlier, two men riding a motorcycle had followed the car.

“I believe this attack was premeditated,” Rafizi added, expressing his deep concern for his family’s safety.

Outrage from political leaders and calls for justice

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil expressed his outrage over the incident, emphasising the importance of family safety.

“I am deeply saddened, shocked, and angry to hear this news. As a father with children near the same age as Brother Rafizi’s, I am equally concerned about the safety of my own family.”

Fahmi also offered his prayers for Rafizi’s son and his family: “I pray for Ben’s swift recovery, may Allah grant safety to Brother Rafizi and his family, and may those responsible be arrested and brought to justice.”

PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh voiced her shock and condemnation.

“On behalf of Keadilan (PKR), I am deeply shocked, saddened, and strongly condemn the attack on the child of Pandan MP and former economy minister Rafizi Ramli in Putrajaya this afternoon. I pray for the child’s full recovery and hope the family remains strong in the face of this trial.”

She added, “Children must never be victims under any circumstances. Such actions are cruel, inhumane, and must be condemned by all parties.”

Keadilan has called on authorities to take immediate and decisive action.

“We urge the authorities to swiftly bring the perpetrators to court and ensure the safety and protection of all citizens, especially children,” Fuziah said.

A call for solidarity

PKR vice-president Chang Lih Kang also condemned the brutal attack, describing it as a targeted and premeditated crime.

“I strongly condemn the vicious attack on Brother Rafizi Ramli’s child, the MP for Pandan,” Chang stated. “This serious crime is clearly planned and targeted. The police must act immediately to identify the perpetrators and their masterminds and bring them to justice.”

Chang continued, “Attacking or harassing the family of a politician is an act of cowardice — especially when the victim is a 12-year-old child.”

As a political ally and a fellow citizen, Chang expressed his sympathy for Rafizi’s family.

“As a friend, I deeply sympathise with Brother Rafizi’s family. As a politician, I worry about the safety of my own family. As a Malaysian, I am deeply concerned about the state of our country.”

“I call on politicians from all parties to stand in solidarity with Brother Rafizi Ramli and his family. We must unite to oppose this despicable culture that threatens the future of our nation.” – August 13, 2025
