Dog euthanised after being found partially skinned alive in Melaka

Police say the animal was discovered with wounds consistent with abuse and a probe has been launched under the Animal Welfare Act

KUALA LUMPUR — A dog discovered with severe injuries believed to be from abuse has been put down on a veterinarian’s advice in Melaka, after being found partially skinned alive at an industrial site.

Melaka Tengah police chief Christopher Patit said the animal, which had deep wounds on its body and neck, was taken for treatment by a feeder who regularly cares for strays in the Krubong area.

“However, the injuries and infection were found to be too serious. On the veterinarian’s advice, the dog was euthanised to avoid prolonging its suffering,” Patit said in a statement late Sunday.

He confirmed police had received a report on Sunday afternoon after the discovery by animal welfare groups two days earlier. Authorities, he said, were treating the case seriously and a full investigation would be conducted under the Animal Welfare Act 2015.

The law provides penalties of between RM20,000 and RM100,000, up to three years’ jail, or both, for cruelty or neglect.

Images of the wounded dog circulated online over the weekend, prompting outrage and condemnation from animal welfare groups.

The Stray Animals Federation Malaysia (SAFM) described the act as “inhumane” and urged police and the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) to act swiftly.

“Animal abuse is a serious offence that must be met with the full force of the law,” SAFM said in a statement, while appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The group has asked anyone with information to contact its hotline (013-7066770) or email [email protected]. — August 18, 2025
