KUALA LUMPUR – Karate superstar Rafael Aghayev, a five-time world champion and Olympic silver medallist, will be in Malaysia next month to conduct a two-day workshop aimed at nurturing the country’s rising karate talents.
The 40-year-old Azerbaijani will lead the programme at City Meridian Convention Centre, Seri Kembangan, Selangor, from September 20 to 21.
Speaking to Scoop, national karate (kumite) head coach R. Sharmendran said the initiative would give young athletes a rare opportunity to learn from one of the sport’s greatest icons.
“This workshop is aimed at exposing our athletes to world-class techniques and training methods, which will not only refine their skills but also broaden their understanding of competitive karate,” said Sharmendran.
He added that the programme, funded by the Youth and Sports Ministry, is part of its ongoing efforts to support athlete development and strengthen Malaysia’s presence in regional and international karate.
“As a former athlete myself, I have always held Aghayev in the highest regard. He was one of my biggest inspirations during my competitive days. To have him here is truly an honour, and I believe our young karatekas will gain invaluable experience from his guidance,” he said.
“It’s not every day that athletes get the chance to train with a legend of this calibre. This workshop will not only boost their technical skills but also their confidence and mindset heading into future competitions,” Sharmendran added.
The event is open to the public, with more than 300 participants expected from Penang, Johor, and other states. An entrance fee will be charged to cover organisational costs.
Aghayev is widely regarded as one of the most decorated karatekas in history. He won the silver medal in the men’s kumite -75kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and is a five-time World Karate Championships gold medallist.
He also holds 11 European Championship titles and has earned the nickname “Panther of the Tatami” for his agility, precision, and dominance on the mat. – August 26, 2025
