KUALA LUMPUR – On Merdeka Day, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei etched their names into Malaysian sporting history by winning the country’s first-ever mixed doubles gold at the Badminton World Championships.
The world No. 4 pair rose to the occasion in Paris, dismantling China’s Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin 21-15, 21-14 in just 40 minutes at the Adidas Arena.
Their commanding display secured Malaysia’s second world crown overall, following Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik’s men’s doubles triumph in 2022.
Having knocked out home favourites Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue in the semi-finals, Tang Jie and Ee Wei seemed calmer in the final, controlling the rallies with precision and composure to sweep aside their Chinese opponents.
For Ee Wei, the victory carried special resonance. “This means a lot to us because it’s Merdeka Day also, and we had many fans coming to support us here, so we felt powerful on court,” she told the Badminton World Federation.
Tang Jie, equally emotional, said the win was the realisation of a lifelong ambition. “I’m very glad that people can call us world champions now – it’s very meaningful for us as athletes. Our mental preparation for the match was very clear, and we were very determined,” he said.
Their victory not only ends Malaysia’s wait for a mixed doubles title but also adds fresh momentum to the nation’s badminton legacy on a day of national pride. — August 31, 2025
