Malaysia–Nepal Asian Cup qualifier may move to Bukit Jalil amid political turmoil in Kathmandu

Violent protests in Nepal’s capital prompt AFC to weigh relocation as player safety takes precedence

KUALA LUMPUR – The Asian Cup qualifying match between Malaysia and Nepal, scheduled for November 18 in Kathmandu, could be relocated to Bukit Jalil National Stadium following escalating political unrest in Nepal.

Speaking to Scoop, Asian Football Confederation (AFC) general-secretary Datuk Seri Windsor Paul confirmed that Bukit Jalil has been identified as an alternative venue should the situation in Kathmandu remain unstable.

“That’s the plan. We have to ensure the safety of players, officials, and fans, and right now Kathmandu poses risks because of the political crisis.

“The AFC has not yet approved Nepal’s Dasharath Stadium, so Bukit Jalil is being looked at as a neutral venue that meets all requirements.

“The final decision will depend on developments in the coming days, but player safety is always the priority,” Windsor said when contacted.

Nepal’s capital has seen violent protests in recent days after the government imposed a controversial ban on social media.

Riots have broken out in several key areas, including Kathmandu, with reports of at least 20 deaths — mostly youths — and nearly 350 injuries since September 8.

The Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu has also advised Malaysians to stay indoors after the government extended a curfew in the capital.

Tribhuvan International Airport was temporarily shut, while the army has stepped in to impose further restrictions.

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) secretary-general Datuk Noor Azman Rahman said the body was awaiting confirmation from AFC on whether the match would be shifted to Bukit Jalil and what logistical steps would follow.

“We have to wait for AFC’s feedback or decision, whether the match is officially moved to Bukit Jalil or kept in Kathmandu.

“Once AFC confirms, then we can make the necessary arrangements with stadium authorities, security, ticketing and travel.

“Until then, everything remains on hold,” Noor Azman told Scoop.

Harimau Malaya have enjoyed a strong start in Group F, defeating Nepal 2-0 in their opening match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in March before thrashing Vietnam 4-0 in June.

The national team currently sit top of the table with two wins from two matches and will wrap up their group campaign against Vietnam on March 31 next year. — September 15, 2025
