Hold GE16, state polls simultaneously to save costs: Loke

DAP secretary-general calls for concurrent elections across Peninsular Malaysia to streamline processes and enhance party preparations

KUALA LUMPUR – The Democratic Action Party (DAP) has proposed that the 16th General Election (GE16) be held concurrently with state elections across Peninsular Malaysia to enhance party preparedness and reduce election-related costs.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke emphasised that this proposal should be given serious consideration, particularly for states under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, to facilitate smoother electoral processes and more effective political strategies, Bernama reported.

“In the last election, separate polls were held due to several factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in the current stable political environment, it would be better if state governments, especially those governed by PH, discuss this with the Federal Government,” Loke told reporters after officiating the 23rd Annual Convention of Negeri Sembilan DAP.

While Loke acknowledged that the dissolution of state assemblies is within the jurisdiction of state governments, he stressed the importance of coordination between federal and state levels for the greater good of the nation.

“Although the power to dissolve Parliament lies with the Prime Minister, it is our responsibility at the party level to be well-prepared and ready when the election is called,” he added. He also noted that although Parliament’s term extends until the end of 2027, certain states like Melaka, Johor, and Sarawak would reach the end of their terms sooner, around 2026, requiring consideration.

In reference to state assembly terms, Loke mentioned that Penang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu are expected to expire in 2028.

On seat allocations within the Unity Government, Loke reiterated DAP’s stance on respecting election victories.

“If a party wins a seat, that seat belongs to them. This principle is clear to all parties involved. Within the Unity Government framework, we should avoid contesting each other’s seats,” he said.

Loke emphasised, however, that DAP does not pressure its partners to adhere to these principles. “What I am stressing is our commitment to the Unity Government’s success and our willingness to continue working together in the future,” he added.

Earlier, Loke also highlighted Malaysia’s positive standing under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership, noting favourable international media coverage on the nation’s economic stability and political direction.

The proposal, while open for discussion, reflects DAP’s broader strategy to enhance their position in upcoming elections, including preparations for the anticipated Sabah state election.

Nevertheless, Loke clarified that the final decision on when elections are held rests with the Prime Minister. – September 21, 2025
