KUALA LUMPUR – The government has approved the installation of high-tech closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at all Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) detention centres and National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) lock-ups nationwide.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government said the decision was made at the Special Cabinet Committee on National Governance (JKKTN) Meeting Series 7 yesterday to ensure detainee safety.
“Serious attention is being given to improving the efficiency of enforcement agencies to safeguard the well-being of detainees,” he said in a Facebook post today.
According to Anwar, this initiative is also part of the government’s broader strategy under the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) to meet the needs of enforcement agencies in tackling security challenges and strengthening monitoring of detention facilities.
He added that the government also views with great concern the recurring incidents of encroachment by foreign fishing vessels into Malaysian waters, which not only violate the nation’s maritime sovereignty but also cause revenue losses from marine resources, affecting the livelihood of local fishermen.
“Out of concern and the government’s firm stance of not compromising on issues related to the nation’s maritime sovereignty, the meeting agreed that such matters should be addressed through strategic cooperation between Malaysia and the countries involved.
“The policy and legislative reforms agreed upon yesterday reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring that the public service remains responsive to national security needs while upholding the principles of efficiency, transparency, and effectiveness in public sector governance,” he said. – September 26, 2025
