KUALA LUMPUR – Ships in the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) are expected to enter Gaza’s “red zone” waters by 7pm tomorrow, raising the stakes for the humanitarian convoy sailing towards the blockaded enclave.
Datuk Dr Sani Araby Abdul Alim Araby, head of the Sumud Nusantara Command Centre (SNCC) and chief executive of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (MAPIM), said the vessels are now in the second level of the yellow zone after clearing the Mediterranean without incident.
“The flotilla is currently 227 nautical miles from Gaza’s shoreline. Weather and speed are favourable, and there have been no reports of attacks or suspicious drone activity,” Sani told reporters at SNCC’s daily briefing in Kuala Lumpur, reported Bernama.
He said SNCC will activate live CCTV feeds from selected ships as an added safety measure when the convoy enters the red zone, an area categorised as “critical” due to the likelihood of being intercepted.
“This is the critical stage because interception usually takes place at night. The same pattern was seen with Madleen, Handala, and the Mavi Marmara,” Sani said, referring to earlier flotilla missions halted by Israeli forces.
Despite the risks, Sani assured that all Malaysian delegates on board the GSF remain in good health and called on the public to continue their prayers.
“SNCC reiterates that all parties should rely on us as the only official source of updates. Any misinformation only aids Zionist propaganda,” he added.
According to SNCC, two vessels – the Tunisian ship Nusantara and Italy’s Taigete – suffered serious damage and cannot continue. However, the Sirius and Free Willy, which had earlier reported mechanical problems, have been repaired and are back on course.
Another ship, the Fair Lady, is being towed by the Estrella Manuel to ensure it remains part of the convoy. Meanwhile, SNCC confirmed that two Turkish vessels, the Sunflower and Australe, have joined the flotilla.
A total of 34 Malaysians are participating in the mission, which comprises activists from 45 countries determined to break the siege on Gaza.
The flotilla, currently sailing in international waters near Greece, is carrying food, medicine, and calls for peace, while demanding an end to famine and war in the besieged territory.
The GSF has already faced numerous obstacles, including drone harassment, but continues to push forward. Malaysia was the first country to officially endorse the mission, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim voicing his support. — September 30, 2025
