KUALA LUMPUR – Wan Kuzain Wan Ahmad Kamal’s days of donning the Harimau Malaya jersey may soon become a reality, as national team head coach Peter Cklamovski has expressed interest in calling up the United States-born midfielder for national duty.

Speaking to Scoop, Kuzain’s brother, Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, said discussions about the 27-year-old’s inclusion have been ongoing, and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) remains keen to bring him into the national setup.

“To be fair, FAM, the national team body, and the current head coach have always expressed interest in Kuzain. He has not been completely excluded from the national team plans,” he said.

“There have been discussions, and from what I understand, his name remains under consideration. So, there is still hope for him to be called up when the timing and circumstances are right.”

Wan Fayhsal added that the former Sporting Kansas City player’s potential inclusion could inject much-needed creativity and flair into Malaysia’s midfield while also strengthening competition for places in the squad.

He revealed that he recently met national team deputy chief executive officer Stanley Bernard, who reaffirmed that the body remains interested in Kuzain’s services.

“I had a brief catch-up with Stanley about two weeks ago, and he mentioned that the national team body and FAM are still keen on Kuzain and plan to call him up at some point. That’s encouraging to hear,” said Wan Fayhsal.

Earlier, Wan Fayhsal told Scoop that his brother is ready to sacrifice his American citizenship to represent Harimau Malaya.

Born in Illinois, Kuzain trained with and represented the United States at the under-17 level from 2013 to 2015 and gained experience with Dutch Eredivisie club Feyenoord in 2015.

Kuzain is eligible to represent Malaysia due to his Malaysian parentage. However, his commitment to the national team has faced scrutiny in the past.

In November 2019, Kuzain was called up to train with Malaysia’s under-23 national team under Datuk Ong Kim Swee ahead of the 2019 SEA Games in Manila but was excluded due to citizenship documentation issues. – October 10, 2025
