KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, dressed in a soft blue Malay suit, made his way to Parliament today in the Proton e.MAS 7, marking a historic moment as the car represents Malaysia’s first production electric vehicle.
Donning a light blue Baju Melayu, Anwar departed the Finance Ministry (MOF) building at 3.30pm, carrying a black bag embellished with traditional songket, which contained the essential Budget 2026 documents.
The bag, designed by a creator with disabilities, is a testament to Malaysia’s commitment to inclusivity.
Before heading to Parliament, Anwar took part in a prayer session. He was accompanied by Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, Deputy Minister Lim Hui Ying, and Treasury Secretary-General Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican.
The Proton e.MAS 7, an electric vehicle that signals a milestone for Malaysia’s automotive industry, carried Anwar to Parliament for his delivery of the 2026 Budget.
Media reports confirm that the bag Anwar carried was designed by Anthony Liew You Chung, a 37-year-old youth with autism and hearing impairment from Kuching, Sarawak. Liew, a member of Heart Treasures, a social enterprise that empowers young people with special needs, hand-wove the bag’s panels using repurposed nitrile gloves.
In a previous media briefing, Anwar, also the Finance Minister, outlined that the 2026 Budget under the Madani Government would prioritise the welfare of citizens, economic strengthening, and the development of a sustainable, inclusive nation.
According to the Dewan Rakyat calendar, the Supply Bill (Budget) 2026 will go through the debate process after today’s presentation.
The debate will take place at the policy stage for eight days, with ministries wrapping up from October 29 to November 4. Committee stage debates will follow from November 5 to 27, before the Budget is set for approval. – October 10, 2025
