RM4,000 grant to scrap old car, buy new Proton, Perodua

Under Budget 2026, government and national car makers to provide the grant to ensure better road safety

KUALA LUMPUR — A RM4,000 matching grant will be provided under Budget 2026 to car owners who replace old vehicles of more than 20 years with a new national car.

Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government and national car makers, such as Proton and Perodua, will provide the grant, provided owners dispose their old vehicle.

They only qualify to receive the grant if they purchase a car under the two national marques.

“Vehicles older than 20 years are a safety risk…the government wants to encourage owners to scrap their old vehicle and buy a new national car,” Anwar, who is also the prime minister, said when tabling Budget 2026 in the Dewan Rakyat today. – October 10, 2025
