Tengku Zafrul, Kenny to stay out of BAM committees as Chong Wei makes official return

BAM president says move to avoid conflict of interest as association restructures under ‘Tangkis 2030’ plan

PETALING JAYA — Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz and secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh will not sit on or lead any of the association’s committees, in a move to ensure transparency and avoid conflicts of interest.

Tengku Zafrul said the decision was part of BAM’s structural overhaul under its long-term Tangkis 2030 roadmap, which aims to streamline operations and strengthen accountability within the national body.

“We have reduced the number of committees from 14 to 10 to make the organisation more efficient and focused,” said Tengku Zafrul after chairing the BAM Council meeting in Petaling Jaya today.

“Out of the 10, nine chairpersons have been appointed — all are council members. Both the secretary-general and I will not sit on any of these committees because we want to avoid any perception of favouritism or bias.”

He added that each committee would also include external experts to provide professional insight and strengthen decision-making.

“We want every committee to benefit from specialists in their respective areas, so we can operate more effectively and professionally,” he said.

The meeting also marked the official return of national badminton icon Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei, who was appointed as chairman of the Performance Committee.

Tengku Zafrul described Chong Wei’s inclusion as a key step in enhancing player development and performance management.

“We’re very happy to have Chong Wei back. His experience as a former world No. 1 and Olympic medallist will be invaluable in helping to identify and nurture future champions,” he said.

Chong Wei’s appointment is seen as part of BAM’s wider effort to revitalise the sport at both elite and grassroots levels ahead of its 2030 objectives.

The Tangkis 2030 plan focuses on strengthening coaching structures, athlete welfare, and long-term sustainability in Malaysian badminton — with hopes of producing world-class players once again. — October 18, 2025
