KUALA LUMPUR As Hindus across Malaysia celebrate Deepavali — the Festival of Lights — national leaders have shared messages of goodwill, reflecting on the festival’s enduring themes of light triumphing over darkness, and unity in diversity.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and Raja Permaisuri Agong Raja Zarith Sofiah conveyed their royal greetings via Facebook, wishing all Hindus a joyous and prosperous celebration.

“May this Deepavali bring happiness, peace and prosperity to everyone celebrating,” read the royal message.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in a video message, expressed hope that this year’s festival would serve as a reminder of Malaysia’s shared journey towards progress and justice.

“May Deepavali bring light and happiness to Malaysian families,” he said, adding that the spirit of enlightenment should guide the nation forward.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged Malaysians to uphold unity, tolerance and love — values he described as the foundation of a harmonious, multi-racial nation.

“Like the light of a lamp that illuminates the darkness, the unity of Malaysians will continue to be the light that leads this country towards a prosperous and peaceful future,” he said in his message.

Among other ministers extending their wishes was Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, who encouraged Malaysians to maintain mutual respect and togetherness.

“I would like to wish a Happy Deepavali to all Hindus, especially to farmers, breeders and fishermen who are the backbone of the nation’s food sector,” he said.

Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang reflected deeply on the festival’s symbolism, urging Malaysians to let the light of Deepavali “illuminate the hearts of all” beyond boundaries of race and religion.

“True light does not only come from lamps, but from sincere hearts, helping hands and souls that shine for each other,” he said.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo echoed similar sentiments, calling on Malaysians to draw inspiration from the festival as they embrace change in a rapidly evolving digital world.

“Take this opportunity to celebrate Deepavali and strengthen the bonds of love with your loved ones. May this Festival of Lights bring rays of happiness, joy and prosperity to all,” he said.

As lamps flicker across homes and temples nationwide, the leaders’ messages converge on one theme — that Malaysia’s light shines brightest when its people stand together in harmony. — October 20, 2025
