KUALA LUMPUR – A 14-year-old male student from a secondary school in Bandar Utama was charged in the Petaling Jaya Magistrates’ Court this morning with the murder of a 16-year-old female student.

The charge was read out before Magistrate Amira Sariaty Zainal, but no plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the High Court’s jurisdiction.

He is accused under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty; however, for those under the age of 18, the maximum sentence is a prison term of up to 30 years if found guilty.

The court set November 21 for case mention.

According to the charge sheet, the teenager allegedly repeatedly stabbed Yap Shing Xuen to death in the girls’ toilet of the school in Bandar Utama 4, on October 14, between 9.20am and 9.35am.

Deputy Public Prosecutors Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, Aqharie Durranie Aziz, and Nur Sabrina Zubairi are handling the prosecution.

The proceedings were held behind closed doors in accordance with the Child Act 2001.

The accused was represented by lawyer Anwar Ezzad Zainal.

Earlier, the accused arrived at the courthouse around 8.30am by police van and was escorted through a back entrance to avoid media personnel waiting in the lobby.

Media reports previously indicated that Selangor Police Chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar confirmed an initial post-mortem report at the University of Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) showed the cause of death was multiple stab wounds to the chest and neck. – October 22, 2025
