KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian police have barred all gatherings near Ampang Park tomorrow, citing security risks and the need to protect the country’s image as it hosts the 47th Asean Summit.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said intelligence assessments conducted with other agencies had deemed the area unsuitable for assemblies, classifying it as a “red zone” due to its proximity to key locations linked to the summit.
“Ampang Park lies less than 50 metres from the protocol route and the official accommodation for Asean Summit delegates,” Fadil told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters today.
“For security reasons, and to preserve Malaysia’s image while ensuring the smooth conduct of this international event, police will not permit any gatherings in the area.”
Authorities have received information about up to three planned gatherings at Ampang Park between 9am and 11.30am tomorrow, expected to draw as many as 1,500 participants.
It is understood that the events are being organised by a coalition of pro-Palestinian groups to protest against the presence of US President Donald Trump, who is scheduled to attend the summit.
Fadil said police had met with organisers and proposed alternative venues — including Dataran Merdeka and Padang Merbok — but the groups remained intent on demonstrating at Ampang Park.
“If the gatherings proceed, they will be considered a breach of security directives, and firm action will be taken in accordance with the law. Police will order participants to disperse and maintain control to prevent any provocation,” he said.
While stressing that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) respects the public’s right to assemble, Fadil reminded all parties to comply with laws and safety instructions during the summit period.
Full police strength — including reinforcements from other districts — will be deployed across the capital to safeguard the event, which will be attended by regional leaders and international delegates.
“The 47th Asean Summit reflects Malaysia’s standing on the international stage. It is our shared responsibility — including the public and NGOs — to ensure the smooth running of this important event,” Fadil said.
Malaysia, serving as Asean Chair this year under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, will host the summit and related meetings from October 26 to 28 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. — October 25, 2025
