KUALA LUMPUR – The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has condemned the embarrassing and disgraceful scenes that unfolded during the FA Cup quarter-final second-leg clash between Selangor and Negri Sembilan at the MBPJ Stadium on Wednesday.

Videos showing violent clashes between rival fans inside and outside the venue have since gone viral, sparking outrage among football supporters and prompting calls for tougher action from the authorities.

FAM acting president Datuk Yusoff Mahadi said the governing body views the incident as a black mark on Malaysian football and has referred the matter to the Malaysia Football League (MFL), which oversees the Super League.

“The match was under MFL’s supervision. A report will be submitted to them, and any decision will be made under their jurisdiction,” he said when contacted.

“However, FAM will continue to monitor the situation closely. What happened was truly embarrassing and unacceptable — it tarnishes the image of our football. We cannot allow such disgraceful behaviour to continue”.

At the same time, Yusoff also said the incident highlights the urgent need for better crowd control and fan education at local matches.

“MFL must take firm action against those responsible. Whether it involves the clubs or the supporters, there must be accountability. These actions go against the spirit of the game and everything we’re trying to build in Malaysian football,” he said.

He urged fans to express their passion responsibly and to uphold sportsmanship regardless of the result.

“In their enthusiasm to support their teams, fans must remember that football is meant to unite, not divide. Winning should be celebrated, while defeat must be accepted with dignity,” he said.

Yusoff said such incidents could deter families and young fans from attending games, ultimately hurting the sport’s growth.

“If fans cannot behave, it will only drive people away from our stadiums. We want football to be a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone,” he added.

The match, which Selangor lost 3-2 to Negri Sembilan but still advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-3 aggregate win to set up a meeting with Sabah, turned chaotic after tempers flared between supporters from both sides.

In a brief statement to Scoop, the Malaysia Football League (MFL) said it will look into the matter thoroughly and take the necessary disciplinary action once the official match report and security reports are reviewed. – October 31, 2025
