KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Malaysians to stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan as violence and mass displacement continue to devastate the war-torn nation.

Expressing deep alarm over what he described as a “humanitarian catastrophe”, Anwar called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law.

“Reports of atrocities that may amount to crimes against humanity, even genocide, are intolerable,” he said in a statement today.

“Malaysia calls for an immediate cessation of violence and for the protection of civilians in full accordance with international humanitarian law.”

Anwar said Malaysia stands firmly with the Sudanese people and urged the international community to act decisively to halt the suffering, restore humanitarian access, and support a credible process toward peace and accountability.

His statement comes amid worsening conditions in El Fasher and across Darfur, where aid agencies have warned of famine, mass killings, and large-scale displacement.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported that more than 1,500 people fled their homes last week from cities in North and South Kordofan due to intensifying insecurity.

According to the IOM, 1,205 people were displaced from the cities of Bara and Umm Ruwaba in North Kordofan, while another 360 fled Al-Abbasiya and Delami in South Kordofan, seeking refuge in nearby areas and in the White Nile state.

Since April 2023, fighting between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has killed over 20,000 people and displaced more than 15 million, according to UN and local reports.

Despite repeated mediation efforts, the conflict shows little sign of abating, leaving millions on the brink of starvation and trapped in a cycle of violence that Anwar said “shocks the conscience of humanity.” — November 3, 2025
