KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s new national emergency call system, the Next Generation Emergency Services (NG999), officially begins operations today, replacing the long-running Malaysian Emergency Responses 999 (MERS999) system.
The public is encouraged to download the SaveME999 app via the App Store or Google Play, enabling emergency information to be transmitted more accurately, quickly and efficiently — ultimately speeding up response by the authorities.
Since yesterday, SMS reminders have been sent to users urging responsible use of the emergency hotline.
“Please avoid misuse of the emergency line,” the message stressed.
NG999 was developed as an integrated strategic digital system connecting emergency call centres with multiple relevant agencies. Through real-time data and resource sharing, the system is expected to improve service efficiency and reduce response times.
According to Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching in July, the new system incorporates the latest technologies including web-based digital mapping, caller ID, geolocation services, artificial intelligence (AI), and a smart mobile application. These combined technologies allow emergency incidents to be handled in a more systematic and comprehensive manner.
She emphasised that NG999 is not merely a technical upgrade, but a holistic transformation of how the country manages emergency calls. With AI and geolocation integration, authorities can pinpoint incident locations more accurately, enabling faster deployment of assistance.
The system has also been expanded to more than 800 locations nationwide — double the coverage offered by MERS999. This ensures wider access to emergency services, including in rural and remote areas.
The implementation of NG999 reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening public safety through modern technology. With this new system, Malaysia takes a significant step forward in ensuring every emergency call receives immediate attention, for the safety and well-being of the community. – 16 November, 2025
