KUALA LUMPUR — The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has condemned the assault on sports journalist Haresh Deol, calling the incident a disturbing act that goes against the very principles of sportsmanship in the country.

The veteran journalist was reportedly attacked by two men in Bangsar on Tuesday, prompting outrage from various media and sporting circles.

Acting President Datuk Wira Mohd Yusoff Mahadi said that violence, intimidation or any form of threat towards members of the media has no place in Malaysian sports culture, and should never be used as a way to silence critical voices.

“Any act of aggression or attempt to obstruct the professional duties of journalists is completely unacceptable and does not reflect the spirit of sportsmanship nor the values of integrity upheld by this governing body,” said Yusoff.

He added that journalists play a crucial role in the sporting ecosystem by holding stakeholders accountable, ensuring transparency and protecting the integrity of the game.

Yusoff also urged authorities to conduct a full investigation into the incident and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

He further reiterated its commitment to fostering a safe and respectful environment between sports organisations and media practitioners.

Yusoff said the FAM stands in solidarity with Haresh and hopes that he recovers swiftly.

“We pray that he is in good condition and continues to be given strength following this unfortunate incident,” he added.

Haresh shared details of the assault in a post on social media platform X, confirming that he had lodged a police report.

He expressed his shock, noting that this was the first such attack in his career. His colleague, Pearl Lee, also shared the news and called for justice in the case. – November 26, 2025
