Graft allegations against Shamsul could tarnish Unity Government’s credibility: Yeo

DAP MP urges MACC to conduct 'uncompromising' probe against PM's ex-aide and take action without fear or favour

KUALA LUMPUR – The allegations of bribery involving Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, the former Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, could not only threaten the individual’s integrity, but also the credibility of the Unity Government.

DAP National Publicity Secretary Yeo Bee Yin said this in a statement today, in lauding Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s remark that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has full, independent authority to investigate the case, without external interference.

“The DAP emphasises that any allegation of wrongdoing, especially involving those in public office, must be treated with utmost seriousness.

“Such a scandal threatens not only the integrity of the individual involved, but also the credibility of the Unity Government and its commitment to clean, transparent, and accountable governance,” Yeo, who is also Puchong MP, added.

She noted that it has always been DAP’s stance that a government entrusted by the rakyat must be beyond reproach and intolerant of corruption in any form.

“We therefore strongly urge the MACC to conduct a comprehensive and uncompromising investigation into this matter, and to take firm and decisive actions without fear, favour, or hesitation.”

Under MACC probe

In confirming Shamsul’s recent resignation, Anwar earlier today assured that the Madani government remains steadfast in its principle of transparency and integrity.

Shamsul announced his resignation yesterday, citing alleged attempts to tarnish his reputation with matters that could damage the credibility of the Madani government.

Shamsul, who is also Melaka PKR chairman, had previously been embroiled in controversy over his involvement in issuing a letter of support for a contractor in a hospital project.

Shortly after, Malaysiakini reported that controversial businessman Albert Tei had claimed to have spent RM629,000 on Shamsul, including renovations on a property linked to the PKR leader, as well as providing premium cigars and a custom-made suit.

Tei, who was previously charged in June over bribery allegations involving two Sabah state assemblymen in relation to a mineral licensing scandal, has been at the centre of the latest allegations.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has since confirmed that both Tei and Shamsul would be summoned shortly to provide statements regarding the corruption claims. – November 26, 2025
