MACC chief denies officers pointed gun against Albert Tei’s head

Tan Sri Azam Baki says the businessman's arrest was done according to Standard Operating Procedures

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has denied claims that its officers held a gun against businessman Albert Tei’s head during his arrest earlier this morning.

In a statement, its chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that Tei’s arrest was done according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

He said that his party had also filed a police report to enable the authorities to investigate the allegations, which were deemed to be defamatory against the officers involved.

“This police report is also to ensure that no parties spread any unverified news with the intention of disrupting the investigation into the case being conducted by the MACC,” he said.

Earlier today, Tei’s lawyer Zaid Malek said that a MACC raiding party forced their way into his client’s home in Puchong, before escorting him out in handcuffs.

Zaid said the raid was informed via a search warrant delivered to another of Tei’s lawyers, Mahajoth Singh, via a WhatsApp from an unknown number this morning.

Malaysiakini quoted Tei’s wife claiming that one of the raiding officers pointed a gun against her husband’s head, before cuffing him during the operation.

Tei is embroiled in a bribery scandal involving Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, the former senior political secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Shamsul allegedly got Tei to spend RM629,000 for him, including for property renovation work, as well as for premium cigars and a bespoke suit.

Aside from Tei, the MACC has also detained Shamsul and a woman named Sofia Rini Buyong, who allegedly acted as a proxy for Shamsul, after they were called for questioning.

In June, Tei was charged with two counts of bribing Sabah state assembly members in connection with a mineral licensing scandal in the state.

Meanwhile, Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng has slammed as “excessive”, the way businessman Tei was arrested by the authorities from his home this morning.

“Law enforcement must be proportional and done in a professional manner. Violent or intimidating actions only undermine public confidence.

“Explanations and assurances that such incidents will not be repeated are urgently needed,” the DAP lawmaker said in a brief statement this afternoon. – November 28, 2025
