Shamsul Iskandar, Albert Tei dragged to court as MACC seeks remand

Former Aide and businessman detained amid bribery investigation

10:48 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Former Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, and businessman Albert Tei were brought before the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court today, as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) seeks a remand order to continue their detention.

The pair, dressed in orange detention attire and handcuffed, arrived at the court premises around 8:59 am in an MACC van.

As he alighted from the vehicle, Albert shouted, “This is the consequence of exposing a case involving top leaders.”

Shamsul, however, remained silent.

The MACC had detained Shamsul, Albert, and a woman, Sofia Rini Buyong, yesterday to assist with the probe into alleged bribery. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that the trio were detained to help investigate claims of bribery involving Albert and Shamsul, related to recovering funds allegedly distributed to Sabah assemblymen.

Azam said Albert was initially scheduled to provide a statement on December 1 but refused to cooperate with investigators.

He was subsequently arrested at his Puchong residence at 10.15am yesterday. The MACC has served Albert with a notice under Section 28A(9) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Sofia Rini was detained at 10.30pm yesterday and has been remanded for four days until Monday.

The MACC emphasised that the case is of public interest and has conducted the investigation swiftly to prevent manipulation by certain parties. – November 29, 2025
