Singapore to ban smartphones for secondary students during school hours

The rule, aimed at at promoting healthier screen habits among the youth, will be enforced on January 1, 2026

KUALA LUMPUR – Singapore will prohibit secondary school students from using smartphones and smartwatches during schooling hours, starting January 2026.

According to the Ministry of Education, the move is aimed at promoting healthier screen habits among the youth. It is an expansion of the current restriction that only applies during lesson time.

Under the new rules, students’ devices will be kept in designated storage areas or school bags throughout school hours, reported Bernama.

Schools, however, may grant exceptions where necessary.

“Screen use among students has been shown to displace important activities such as sleep, physical activity and social interactions with friends and family, and is linked to poorer holistic well-being,” added the ministry.– December 1, 2025
