KUALA LUMPUR – Businessman Albert Tei said he “feared for his life” when Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers raided his home last Friday and allegedly pointed guns at him.
Relating his experience, the 37-year-old said he believed that the seven to eight men clad in balaclavas were going to open fire at him.
“I was in fear and in a state of panic. What is my offence? I am not a drug dealer, a bank robber or a terrorist.
“They said I breached a notice (to go to MACC). They pointed their guns at my head and bound my hands with cable tie,” the New Straits Times (NST) quoted him saying in a press conference after settling a RM70,000 with two sureties bail this afternoon, following his charge with four counts of corruption this morning.
Tei today claimed trial to four counts of corruption involving RM176,829.03, at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court. He was accused of giving the alleged bribe to former Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.
He is accused of giving Shamsul cash and household items on several occasions between November 2023 and March this year, as an inducement for his companies to obtain mineral exploration licences in Sabah.
The charges against Tei were framed under Section 17(b) of the MACC Act, for allegedly giving bribes. Upon conviction, Tei could also be jailed for up to 20 years, or fined not less than five times the value of the gratification or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Earlier today, Shamsul Iskandar also claimed trial to receiving bribe from Tei, involving the approval of mineral exploration licenses in Sabah.
The Melaka PKR chief was let off on a RM150,000 bail, and later vowed to prove his innocence.
“Insya-Allah, I will prove my innocence. We will follow the legal process through the courts. I will uphold the principles of the law, and from the start, I have fully cooperated with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) throughout the investigation,” he was quoted saying. – December 4, 2025
