No compromise on misconduct, IGP vows in Melaka shooting probe

Police receive audio evidence, investigation now under CID leadership to ensure transparency and professionalism

KUALA LUMPUR – Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail has vowed there will be no compromise when it comes to addressing any misconduct, following the receipt of an audio recording linked to the controversial police shooting of three men in Durian Tunggal, Melaka, on November 24.

Confirming that the police had received a CD containing the recording, Khalid stated the clip is believed to feature a phone conversation between one of the victims and his wife before the tragic incident, local media reported.

“The investigation will be conducted thoroughly and professionally. We will not compromise on any form of misconduct,” Khalid affirmed, stressing the importance of ensuring a fair and just process.

The case gained further attention after the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) took over the investigation earlier this week. A Senior Assistant Commissioner is now leading the special team formed to look into the matter. Khalid explained that this step was taken to guarantee a professional and orderly handling of every aspect of the investigation.

The incident, which initially saw the Melaka police investigating the case for attempted murder, has sparked controversy. Police claimed the men, M Puspanathan (21), T Poovaneswaran (24), and G Logeswaran (29), were serial robbers who had attacked an officer with a machete.

However, lawyers representing the families of the deceased have disputed this version, suggesting that forensic evidence and an audio recording indicate the men were killed in an execution-style shooting.

The families have since called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) and urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to intervene in the case, which has raised questions about police conduct. Prime Minister Anwar has since directed Khalid to ensure a transparent investigation is carried out.

Khalid also urged the public to refrain from speculating on the case, as such actions could undermine the integrity of the ongoing investigation. He further appealed to anyone with information to contact the police’s hotline at 019 376 4763.

Once the CID completes its investigation, Khalid has been instructed to submit a detailed report to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. – December 7, 2025
