KUALA LUMPUR – Former national badminton player Muhammad Roslin Hashim has officially embarked on a new chapter in his coaching career, taking up the role of head coach for Egypt’s national badminton team this month.
Speaking to Scoop from Cairo, Roslin said the decision was driven by his desire to gain new experiences as a coach abroad.
The Egyptian Badminton Federation (EBF) has offered him a three-year contract in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
“This is a new challenge for me. The responsibilities ahead are significant, not only as a coach but also as a technical director and head coach,” he said.
“It’s a big task, and I will do my best to excel in my career.”
Roslin added that the opportunity presented by the EBF would allow him to share his knowledge and expertise to help develop badminton in Egypt.
“The level of badminton there isn’t very high, so I want to do something to push the Egyptian players out of their comfort zone,” he said.
As a player, Roslin achieved top world rankings and won multiple international titles, earning him recognition as one of Malaysia’s finest badminton exports.
Currently, only a handful of Egyptian players have broken into the top 200 globally, with the mixed doubles pair Adham Hatem Elgamal and Doha Hany ranked 86th.
Individually, Elgamal is 178th in the men’s singles, Nour Ahmed Youssri is 122nd in the women’s singles, while the men’s doubles pair Ahmed Ali Bahnsawy and Ezzat Kareem are 210th, and Nour Ahmed Youssri-Doha Hany is 169th in the women’s doubles.
Roslin follows in the footsteps of his younger brother, Hafiz Hashim, who is coaching in Saudi Arabia. Other Malaysian coaches currently working overseas include Lee Wan Wah in Japan, Wong Choon Hann in Hong Kong, and Tan Kim Her in India.
The former world number one’s role in Egypt will focus not only on preparing the team for the Olympics but also on raising the standard of badminton in a country that is still developing in the sport. – December 8, 2025
