KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia has urged Cambodia and Thailand to cease cross-border hostilities from 10pm tonight, and an ASEAN Observer Team (AOT will be deployed to the ground to ensure the truce stays intact, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
He made the appeal in separate calls with Thailand’s Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, and Cambodian counterpart Hun Manet.
“I (have) conveyed Malaysia’s deep concern over the situation and urged both sides to exercise maximum restraint, cease all forms of hostilities and refrain from any further military actions, including the use of force or forward movement of armed units, with effect from 13 December 2025,” he said in a statement on social media.
“To support de-escalation and promote transparency, I have requested the deployment of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), led by the Malaysian Chief of Defence Forces, to monitor developments on the ground. This mission will be complemented by satellite monitoring capabilities provided by the United States Government, commencing at the same time.”
Data from the satellite monitoring and field observations will be presented at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting this Tuesday, to “provide an objective account of the situation”, Anwar, who is ASEAN chairman for 2025, added.
His latest statement on hostilities between Thailand and Cambodia follows his earlier discussion with US President Donald Trump.
Trump had earlier claimed he had successfully halted the fighting after getting the agreement of both Charnvirakul and Manet to a truce. However, international news media reported that Thailand has vowed to continue fighting despite Trump’s intervention.
Charnvirakul was reported posting on Facebook that Thailand would “continue to perform military actions until we feel no more harm and threats to our land and people.”
Neither Charnvirakul or Manet had confirmed their agreement to a truce after their respective calls with Trump.
The latest round of fighting between Thai and Cambodian forces erupted on December 8, despite a ceasefire signed in October. — December 13, 2025
