Education Ministry scraps teacher training system to lighten workload

Minister Fadhlina Sidek vows to help teachers focus on what matters most – teaching – as new curriculum changes approach

KUALA LUMPUR — The Education Ministry (MOE) has officially abolished the Ministry of Education Malaysia Training Management System (SPLKPM) as part of its ongoing efforts to lighten the workload of teachers.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek explained that the decision was made after a thorough assessment of the system’s impact on teachers, coupled with feedback indicating that the system had become a distraction from their core responsibilities, Bernama reported.

“We have been continuously monitoring teachers’ workload and, through various interventions over time, sought to address issues that affect their work-life balance,” said Fadhlina at a press conference following the handover of the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Sheikh Tahir Jalaluddin school project today.

The SPLKPM system, introduced in early 2024, was intended as a platform for educators to manage their professional development, track training activities, earn credit points, and register for courses. However, it had become a significant administrative burden for teachers.

Fadhlina noted that many educators had expressed concerns about the system’s demands, which they felt interfered with their primary role in the classroom.

“This has been a consistent topic of discussion among teachers, and their primary wish is to focus on their teaching and not be bogged down by administrative tasks,” she said.

The minister emphasised that the abolition of SPLKPM would allow teachers to devote more time and energy to preparing for next year’s curriculum changes and a new education development plan.

“In 2026, we will begin implementing a new curriculum starting with preschool, and we want our teachers to be fully focused in the classroom,” she explained.

Fadhlina reiterated that the MOE’s commitment to reducing teacher workload was ongoing. “Every step we take is part of our broader goal to ensure that teachers are not overwhelmed by unnecessary tasks. We will continue to evaluate ways to lessen their burdens to enhance the quality of education,” she added.

The removal of SPLKPM is seen as a step towards increasing teachers’ confidence and ensuring they can effectively contribute to educational reforms.

“Our aim is to ease teachers’ workload and allow them to focus on improving teaching and learning, mastering pedagogy, and leading reforms in the classroom,” Fadhlina said. – December 14, 2025
